Yasaman Ghorbanzadeh is an Iranian lawyer, writer, and independent legal researcher whose work examines the relationship between Islamic jurisprudence and modern state law. Her research asks how juristic ideas acquire legal force through legislation, judicial interpretation, and state institutions, and how this process shapes human rights, gender, and the possibilities of legal reform.

Focusing primarily on Iran within the broader legal and political context of the Middle East, she studies the movement of religious concepts from classical texts into legislation, judicial reasoning, and institutional practice. Her work is grounded in the view that religious legal traditions are neither static nor isolated from historical change. Rather than assuming an inevitable conflict between Islamic jurisprudence and modernity, she investigates how legal concepts are selected, reformulated, contested, and transformed.

Guided by the conviction that the structural inequalities confronting women are global in scope, she pays particular attention to the Middle East. Her research explores how religion and patriarchy can reinforce one another when they acquire legal and institutional protection, and how this may create profound obstacles for women asserting even the most basic claims to equality, autonomy, and full legal recognition. She welcomes scholarly dialogue and comparative collaboration in Islamic law, human rights, gender studies, and Middle Eastern legal studies.
